Key Stage 1 Internal Sports Competitions
Key Stage 1 Internal School Sports Competition
Wednesday 24th October will be our first of six internal school sports competitions. These are scheduled for the last Wednesday of each half term. Year 1 will compete in the first session of the morning before it is the turn of Year 2. The events will be hosted by Team Activ and assisted by Burton Road school sports leaders. Children in KS1 trialed these events last summer and found them both to be an enjoyable and engaging way of practicing their fundamental movement skils.
Our Football Season is Back
Key Stage 2 boys and girls were invited to play a friendly match at Springvale School. The girls played first in a close match losing 2-1 but showing lots of promise. The Burton Road goal was scored by Ella Rose Tasker. The boys had a quite convincing win and are hoping to replicate last years success.
Our Y 5/6 boys played in their first competition of the season. This was a qualifier at Outwood Shafton. The lads won the competition and will progress to the finals stage.
Our League campaign began on Friday 19th October at our new home ground. Many thanks to Barnsley College for allowing us to use their new Fleets Site football pitches. We hosted firstly Ladywood in the East League and then Silkstone in the West League.
Our Boys beat Ladywood 7-1 with goals from Lucas Brennan 3, Daniel Bowen, Shaun Lee, Ewan Dale and Cody Cooper Walker. Man of the match performances from Shaun Lee and Oliver Morgan.
In the second match our boys put up a spirited performance against a strong Silkstone team coming second in an 0-8 defeat. Man of the match performances from Reece Deighton and Jake Bennett.
We have many football matches and competitions to come and will be trying to ensure that all who wish to represent Burton Road at football will get their chance during the year.
Year 4 at Locke Park for Cross Country Qualifier
Year 4 Compete at Locke Park in the Cross Country Qualifier
The whole of Year 4 went to Locke Park to compete in our first year group entry at a competition this term. We arrived in time for a little fun in the park before our race was due to start. The children showed great endurance running up the hills of the park and completing the course. Our Year 4 girls were placed first, taking the gold in the team event. Special mentions for Daisy Jeffreys (7th), Edith Mills (8th), Savanah Connor (10th), Natalie Pocklington (11th), Kymi Wood (13th) and Vinnie Britton (8th) in the boys race. Some of these children have been invited to the final at Cannon Hall.
Welldone to all that competed and represented our school!
Year 3/4 Athletics Competition
Athletics Afternoon at Dorothy Hyman Stadium
Children from class 7 spent a hot and sunny Friday afternoon at Dorothy Hyman Stadium. They went along to compete in the Year 3/4 athletics competition and represented Australia on the day. The team of 18 children took part in sprint, distance and relay events on the track. They also competed in 6 different field disciplines. The children showed great support for each other and finished overall as a team, in fifth position. Great Effort!
Burton Road are Barnsley Champions!
Year 5/6 Football Final at Dorothy Hyman
Burton Road A team saved their performance of the season for the Cup Final against Penistone St Johns at Dorothy Hyman Stadium. These are two very strong footballing teams and it was a fitting clash for these two sides to meet in the Barnsley League Final. PSJ lined up in their traditional red colours and from the first whistle looked like a strong outfit. Burton Road started in our new yellow and navy strip, this was a big favourite with swarms of flying bugs, so much so that we changed shirts back to our traditional Navy at halftime. (Thank you Mrs Wilson).
The first half was end to end, both sides creating chances. Goalkeepers at both ends making fine stops, Jenson Hayes notably keeping us in the match at 2-0, to keep the score close. PSJ had taken the lead with a fine individual effort from Nathanial Dyer and it was Nathanial who scored again to make it 2-0 for PSJ. Burton Road were rallied by their ever industrious skipper, Leo Cosgrove. Leo again led by example stepping up to take and score a free kick just before halftime, 2-1.
During halftime with a change of plan required, we shuffled our positions and went with our plan b. The lads showed terrific resilience in the second half, sticking with game plan and not panicking. The breakthrough came from an awesome bit of skill from Max Jeffreys. Max swerved his marker before riffling the equaliser in the far bottom corner. The teams togetherness and spirit showed in their celebrations and there was then only going to be further pressure to come. Lucas Brennan came off the bench as he has done all season and was the quickest to react in the box to pinch the third goal. Leo again converted another free kick to make the score 4-2 to Burton Road. What a fantastic team performance! Champions!
Cricketers at Sunny Shaw Lane Finals
Year 5/6 Cricket Finals at Shaw Lane
Our Year 5/6 cricketers were in action at Shaw Lane on Friday 29th June in the Barnsley Cricket Finals. The team were drawn in a very tough group alongside eventual tournament winners, Barugh Green. The team played some great cricket in their opening matches beating both Oxspring and Jump before losing to Barugh Green, which left us in second place in the group. Unfortunately competition organizers had decided not to play quarter finals, so we did not proceed to the knock out phase. The team played well all day and all players made contributions with the bat and the taking of wickets. A special moment to mention for Callum Shone taking a low one handed reaction catch against Barugh Green. Amazing catch during a great day of cricket in sunny Barnsley!
Barnsley League Semi Final - Mapplewell 1 Burton Road 2
Football Semi Final v Mapplewell
Burton Road A team beat Mapplewell 1-2 in their semi final on Thursday to confirm a place in the Barnsley League Final against Penistone St Johns. The match was played on a poor surface that didn't aid our footballing style of play. The boys started well with a headed goal by Max Curry from a Callum Shone corner. Jenson Hayes made a terrific save, tipping over from a home team free kick. Mapplewell equalised just before halftime with a great strike from their captain and we went in at half time with the score 1-1.
Burton Road continued to press in the second half, creating opportunities but not finding the net. We made a couple of substitutes, Kairan Owen leading the line up top providing a different option and Lucas Brennan playing wide right, replacing Zach Martin due to injury. It was Lucas that was brought down in the box for a penalty and a very calm and confident Max Jeffreys stepped up to slot it in the corner. We then brought on Jude Hooley in midfield to add extra strength to steady our ship.
Speaking with the match referee afterwards, he awarded the whole team with man of the match. Looking on from a coaching point of view, certain players were given specific roles, the back four played with great strength and togetherness and Yaroslav Bondar gave one of the performances of the season so far, alongside Leo Cosgrove in midfield.
Bring on Penistone St Johns in the final!
Boys Collaboration Cup Football Tournament. Burton Road Boys Shine for all the Right Reasons!
Boys Collaboration Cup Football Competition
Friday 15th June was the boys Collaboration Cup Tournament at Barnsley College. There was a massive fifteen teams that entered this competition. Burton Road School entered both their A and B teams, the teams both did well to qualify for the knockout stage. The B team lost their quarter final to a last minute controversial goal and the A team made it to the final but narrowly missed out in a penalty shoot out. Noticeable outstanding performances from Max Jeffreys (A) and Oliver Morgan (B) both from Year 5. All the lads competed to a very high standard and goals flowed from numerous players on both teams.
A particular moment during the day was noted by Provide Education's Darren Artley (Tournament Sponsor), two Burton Road A players, Oliver Brennan and Callum Shone showed great thought and sportsmanship by consoling the opposition that they had just beaten in the knockout stages. Great spirit lads!
Girls Collaboration Cup Football Tournament

Foul Friday at Wortley Tag Rugby Competition
Wortley Rugby Club Tag Rugby Morning
We have been working hard on a Tuesday lunchtime developing our tag rugby skills. We took the opportunity to compete against schools from Barnsley and Sheffield at a competition hosted by Wortley Rugby Club at their home ground in Wortley, Sheffield. The Friday morning of the competition was blustery to say the least but the children showed great character against the conditions. The team took part in a coaching session delivered by the club and then played some awesome tag rugby in competition, against the other schools. They won all their matches apart from one, this was a narrow one point loss against the eventual competition winners. A special mention for Emily Bowen who was awarded the individual girl of the morning award for her resilience. Emily was injured during one match but returned to play in later games and went on to score numerous points for the team. Well done to all involved!

Burton Road Y5/6 Netball team went to compete in the qualification rounds at Horizon before the holiday. Both A & B teams played some great netball and one of the teams qualified for the finals at Holy Trinity on the 25th June. Well done to the team and Miss Windsor for all your hard work!

Bruce Dyer Love Life Cup
Burton Road proved victorious in the Bruce Dyer Cup, after winning 2-0 in the final, on Saturday 28 April. The game was played at Oakwell, during half time, of the Barnsley vs Brentford game, in front of over 13,000 fans. They beat a determined Hoylandswaine team, with the winning goals coming from Max Curry and Hayden Bennett, to round off what had been a fantastic day. The night before, on a cold and rainy Friday evening, the team qualified for the final by winning all their games in the group stage and then progressing to the semi-finals where they beat Dodworth St. John's, 2-0. A huge well done to all the team for bringing home the third football trophy this season. They were: Jenson Hayes, Oliver Brennan, Hayden Bennett, Zach Martin, Leo Cosgrove, Max Jeffreys, Max Curry, Yaroslav Bondar, Callum Shone and Alanna Fox.
Team B Beaten By Mapplewell
Team B played their final league fixture and put in a hardworking performance but ultimately came up short against a strong Mapplewell side. Having got off to a bad start, conceding in the 1st minute, they then went 2-0 down after 10 minutes. However they showed great character to pull themselves back into the game, with Ewan Clarke bravely slotting home just before half time. After the break, Kairan Owen scored a fantastic free kick to bring the scores level and Team B then pushed on in search of the winner. Unfortunately 2 late goals from Mapplewell gave them the victory, which leaves Team B now waiting on other results to see if they have qualified for the semi-final. Man of the Match awards went to Hayden Brown and Ewan Clarke.
It's An Easter Parade for Burton Road A
The Burton Road A Team qualified for the Semi Finals in style by winning their final league match with a whopping 15-0 victory. Playing away at Kexborough School, on a difficult pitch, Burton Road got off to a bright start but were thwarted by an in form goalkeeper who pulled off a string of fine saves. However when Max Curry finally opened the scoring the floodgates opened and the goals just kept coming. Max Curry scored 5 goals, Leo Cosgrove (3), Kairan Owen (3), Lucas Brennan (3) and Hayden Bennett (1) making it 15 in total, as they ran riot in the 2nd half. Team A have now topped their league scoring a massive 32 goals in 3 games. 'Man of The Match' award went to Leo Cosgrove
Our Cheer-tastic Team!

You did yourselves proud, team!
Football Friday 16.03.18
Burton Road School continued to play its' Friday afternoon football with two league matches being played at Horizon School. Team A kicked off first, against Hemingfield Ellis, and found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being two goals down at half time. This meant that they had to raise their game and find some quick solutions in the second half, which is exactly what they did. Max Curry ran riot with a six goal scoring spree and Max Jeffreys chipped in with two more as they won the game 8-2. Man of the match awards went to 6 goal hero, Max Curry, but also to Yaroslav Bondar for a commanding performance in centre midfield, which dragged us back into the game. A special mention also goes to Leo Shaw and Ewan Clarke who put in excellent performances for the opposition, after we let them borrow our players.
Team B were involved in a close run affair against Holy Rood School, having twice been pegged back to both 2-2 and then 3-3. As the game entered the latter stages, Team B managed to finally find the crucial winning goals to emerge victorious, with a 5-3 scoreline, making it a fourth win in five. The goals were scored by Kairan Owen (4) and Billy Darbyshire. Man of the Match Awards went to Oliver Morgan and Kairan Owen. Both teams now qualify for the semi finals if they win their final game. COBR!
Football vs Churchfield
Both Team A and Team B played their league fixtures, against Cudworth Churchfield School, at Barnsley College, on Tuesday 13 March. With goals from Kairan Owen and Billy Darbyshire, the game was evenly poised at 2-2, before Josh Netherwood struck the winner with a fantastic free kick. Next up was Penistone St Johns, where they put in a hard working performance but finally succumbed to a 3-0 defeat. With three games still to come, Team B now have a strong chance of finishing 2nd and qualifying for the semi-finals. Team A kick off their league campaign with a home fixture against Cudworth Churchfield on Tuesday 13 March. COBR!
A huge well done to Class 7 who competed in the Y3/4 Multi-Skills competition, on Friday 09 March, and won the tournament. Congratulations to all and well done to all the class for coming along and taking part!
Well done to our Boys' and Girls' Y5/6 Basketball teams. They competed in the Primary School Basketball competition and beat all the teams that they played except for the eventual winners, being pipped out of their group on 2 baskets scored, after tying on points. They played really well and scored some fantastic baskets. It was also pleasing to see how quickly they picked up, and enjoyed playing a new sport.
Well done to Class 6 who have competed in the Y3/4 Relay Competition at Outwood Academy!
On 30 January, our Y4/5 Boys' Team were the Barnsley Futsal Champions.
After winning their group undefeated they went on to comfortably win both their quarter and semi-finals before competing in a closely contested final against, our big rivals, Penistone St Johns.
The only goal of the game was scored by Max Jeffreys and the boys will now go on to compete in the South Yorkshire Finals. Congratulations to all the team!
South Yorkshire Finals
Congratulations to our Boy's Football Team who competed in the South Yorkshire Finals, on Thursday. Competing in a group of 8 schools, they played against the region's best teams, amassing 13 points, and finishing in 3rd place overall. They played excellent football throughout and were unlucky to be denied by the woodwork, on several occasions, which denied them the elusive goals needed to top the group. To the finish as the 3rd best school in South Yorkshire is a fantastic achievement though and we are proud of all the boys! Well done and we look forward to our forthcoming League fixtures with our new Sports Coach, Mr Woodhall.
Term 1 Football Round Up
This term we entered a total of 8 teams into the Barnsley Schools competitions.
All Y5/6 boys who expressed an interest in playing inter-school competitive football were given the opportunity to do so and, as a result, we entered 4 separate teams into 3 different qualifying events.
Team A and Team C won their events and Team B finished runners up, meaning that they all went through to the Barnsley Finals. Team D just missed out, but only just.
At the Barnsley Finals, Team A went on to win the competition and now go through to represent Barnsley at the Keepmoat Stadium on 11 January, 2018. Team B also won their group and made it to the quarter finals.
Our Y5/6 girls' team also qualified for the Barnsley Finals' Day where they narrowly missed out on making it through to the semis.
In Lower Key Stage 2, we entered two separate Y3/4 boys teams, where Team A successfully made it through to the semi finals and won the Bronze Award, finishing in third place. Likewise, our Y3/4 Girls Team also achieved the Bronze Award, finishing third, after 3 wins and 2 defeats. This was a remarkable achievement seeing as it was their first ever experience of playing in a football team.
So, overall, it's been a very successful term, where lots of children have taken up the opportunity to compete as part of a team and had a fantastic experience in doing so. We've got more to look forward to in the Spring Term, including:
- Y4/5 Girls' and Boys' Futsal
- 2 Teams entered for the Schools' Football League (9 a side)
Cross Country Finals 8.11.17
A huge well done to all the children from years 3 to 6 that earned a place at the Cross Country Individual Finals, by finishing in the top 10. It's a tough event, against the best children from Barnsley. Congratulations to Leo Cosgrove, whose 6th place has earned him a place at the Yorkshire finals, and Emily Bowen, who just missed out in 11th place. Remember you can all join us at Run a Mile, every Tuesday at Friday at 8.30. Get in training and next year, it could
