Language learning at Burton Road will be taught in context with a cultural element embedded and threaded throughout the topics taught. This allows the knowledge learnt to ‘stick’ as the children can make connections in their learning and have a greater understanding of the vocabulary being learnt. We believe that it is vital for all children to experience a range of different learning opportunities and we aim to do this through exciting and engaging MFL lessons. For example, in Year 3 children will learn about Epiphany (the national Spanish holiday) and then Bastille Day (the national day of France) in Year 6. This not only gives children a greater awareness of the customs, cultures and traditions in the wider world but it also broadens their horizons and increases their cultural capital. Children will have the chance to revisit their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar already learnt when moving onto a new topic. See below the document which highlights the vocabulary progression from Years 3-6.
