Class 9

Welcome to Class 9!

Mr Livesey & Miss Evans are both excited to welcome you all back to what we hope is going to be a really enjoyable and successful year in Year 5.

The hard work has already begun and all students have had a excellent transition in Year 5 and have all come back to school demonstrating the schools values and showing a wonderful attitude to learning!

Writing

Our first 'Big Write' will focus on each pupil creating a character description of Liam Digby from the book 'Cosmic, it's one giant leap for boy-kind'.

We have already explored Liam's character and the children have developed some great descriptive pieces to help describe our character. We look forward to reading your end pieces!

Following on from Cosmic, Class 9 have focused on various other pieces of writing including: An biography about local sportsman Callum Simpson, an information text about penguins, a persuasive letter to Mr Harris and a story retell based around Kensukes Kingdom. Before Christmas, we will be continuing to use the book Kensukes Kingdom to complete a diary entry written as Micahel, who is stranded on the island. As well as, writing an informal letter from the short film 'The Alchemists Letter'.

Wider Curriculum - Autumn Term - History, Art, Science, Computing, Music & PSHE.

Our learning this term will focus on Barnsley's history with coal mining, exploring Earth & Space in our science and learning about the famous Leonardo Da Vinci in our Art.

History

As part of our learning in History we visited the Mining museum where pupils got a further insight into the mining industry, even partaking in the underground experience which was enjoyed by all!

Autumn 2

Science

Our learning in science is all about properties and changing of materials.

As part of our lessons we conducted an experiment to see which object/material would either prevent an ice cube from melting or increase the speed in which an ice cub would melt. Our aim of this was to see which material was the best conductor of hear and which was the best insulator.

Class 9 chose their own material to see which would work the best.

PE

Basketball in action! In our lessons we have focused on different passing techniques, dribbling correctly with the ball, learning how to defend and intercept at the appropriate time and working on our technique when shooting!

DT - Cooking & Sewing

Ready, steady, cook!

For our cooking Class 9 focused on creating our very own soup. Firstly, we began by looking at different ingredients which go into soup, before then planning our very our soup creation! As a class we decided to make a Pea & Ham soup and a Tomato & Pepper soup.

Pupils all had a go at different techniques when preparing such as: chopping, dicing, and peeling.

We then enjoyed tasting our soup and then evaluating our attempts with what went well and then what we would do even better next time.

Now we are moving onto our sewing lesson where our end goal is to create a Christmas card by sewing our very own design on the front!

We have begun by learning some different sewing techniques such as a back stich and a running stitch.

We look forward to seeing the final pieces!
