Vision and Rationale

Art & Design

At Burton Road, we believe that Art and Design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high quality Art and Design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

What will Art & Design look like over the next three years at

Burton Road Primary School?

Art, as stated in the national curriculum, should engage, inspire challenge pupils equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Over the last year we have created detailed progression documents for each year group to show the skills and knowledge we aim to teach in each year group from EYFS to KS2.

To ensure that we incorporate all aspects of Art & Design into our curriculum we have decided to teach the four main elements over a two year cycle. Cycle A includes drawing and 3D sculpture and Cycle B covers painting and collage. This particular structure will ensure that all aspects of Art & Design are covered for each child in each key stage therefore allowing the progression and continuity of skills as each child moves through each phase.

We have created medium term plans for the topics taught so far, ensuring each aspect of Art had been broken down into manageable objectives. Our aim is to support teachers to use the progression  documents and medium term plans and develop their short term planning from this.

Our monitoring will be focussed on how well lessons are taught in a sequence that helps children develop both skills and knowledge outlined in the medium term plans.

Overall, we would like to see both teachers and pupils developing a real passion for the subject and for them to reflect on their Art & Design topics using a range of artistic vocabulary and enthusiasm!
