Welcome to Class 5
In Class 5 we are excited to learn and enjoy new challenges! Mrs Schofield, Mrs Firth and Mrs Cooper help us to learn. We work together as a team, love to take responsibility for jobs around the classroom and work together to earn our class dojos which we love! Each Friday we can't wait to share our learning with our family during our 'Find out what we are learning about Fridays.'
Here is our first newsletter for the new academic year.
Welcome back after the break! We hope you have had a wonderful summer with your child and that they are excited to be returning to school and ready to learn. We are looking forward to all the new learning Year 2 will bring and to working with you and your child during their learning journey this year.
This year we will be using Dojos as part of our rewards scheme in school. Dojos are also a great way to share with you your child’s successes in school, further information to follow.
Curriculum and Routines.
The door to Class 5 will be opened at 8.50am every morning. The children will have a morning activity when they arrive before we begin our focused learning with Read Write Inc Phonics or Literacy at 9.05am. To encourage the children to be independent we ask that parents drop their child at the classroom door. We understand you will want to see the displays in the classroom that appear throughout the year and that the children enjoy sharing their learning with you, so we will be organising entry and exit points to our topics regularly throughout the year which you will be invited into school to see. In addition we will be continuing with our popular ‘Find out what we are learning about Friday’s where you are invited into the classroom each Friday to work with your child until register time, in an activity linked to the learning that week. Of course Mrs Firth and I will always be available to support the transition from you in the morning and should you wish to discuss anything at greater length I am always happy to arrange a convenient time with you.
This half term will see our topic exploring the wonderful author Roald Dahl and our class will be focussing on the text ‘Fantastic Mr Fox.’ We will be embracing the text with activities to stimulate our own writing, creating art work, role play. Alongside this, we will be learning about the artist Picasso, creating portraits in his style. Within Maths to begin the year we will be focussing on place value and number. Each Friday a piece of maths work linked to the weeks work will be sent home for your child to please complete by the following Friday.
Reading books.
Children will continue to be provided weekly with the Read Write Inc book from their phonic sessions or a reading book carefully linked to their current reading ability. These books will be changed weekly. In addition children will be listened to read in guided reading sessions during the week.
When you read with your child it would be brilliant if you could ask questions to check your child’s understanding whilst reading and ask them to explain what they have read. Of course we will continue to celebrate the ‘Reading Miles’ reward, so please record in your child’s record book when they read at home so we can reward them within special mentions assembly.
Homework
In addition to the weekly reading books and maths, children will also receive spellings each Friday. We will not be testing the children on these but we will be using them in our writing during the week.
PE
Our PE days are Thursdays and Fridays. Please leave your child’s PE bag on their peg for the week to ensure they have their full PE kit for these days. Unfortunately children will not be able to participate in PE lessons if they do not have the correct kit and footwear.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Schofield, Mrs Firth and Mrs Cooper
